Alexandria, VA — Crystal City is about to gain a cozy new gathering place for bibliophiles and foodies alike. Slated to open later this summer at 1550 Crystal Drive, Daydrift Book Cafe will offer a thoughtfully curated blend of literature, locally sourced eats, and coffeehouse charm — a concept designed to cater to Arlington’s community of readers and relaxed café-goers.

Replacing the now-closed Mah-Ze-Dahr bakery, which operated in the same space for over three years before shuttering in January, Daydrift marks a new chapter for the location. Behind the new venture is Episcope Hospitality, a local hospitality group known for creating welcoming, design-forward experiences.

Though an exact opening date hasn’t been confirmed, signs point to an imminent debut. The cafe’s social media presence teases an arrival “soon,” while Episcope’s website lists a summer 2025 opening. Job postings for baristas, cooks, and front-of-house staff are also active — another indication that preparations are well underway.

Daydrift isn’t just another coffee shop. The space promises to be a sanctuary for reading and relaxation. Guests can expect bookshelves filled with thoughtfully selected titles, ambient lighting, and the aroma of freshly brewed espresso as a backdrop to conversation or quiet contemplation.

Food and beverage offerings aim to strike a balance between comfort and nourishment. According to Episcope, the menu will feature a variety of healthful choices — including seasonal salads, hearty grain bowls, artisan tartines, and smoothies — all crafted with fresh, responsibly sourced ingredients.

In an area rapidly evolving with new developments and amenities, Daydrift Book Cafe seeks to bring a slower, more mindful pace. For locals and visitors alike, it could soon become a go-to spot for lingering with a latte and getting lost in a book.
